Kandy to Ella on the slowest, best train journey in Asia.
Six days climbing from Kandy into the tea country and back down the other side. The centrepiece is the Nanu Oya–Ella line: seven hours to cover 120 kilometres, and nobody on board minds. Doors open, estates rolling past at walking pace, vadai sold through the window.

What actually happens.
The last capital to fall, and it still behaves like one. Evening puja at the Temple of the Tooth — go at six, when the drummers start. Afterwards, a walk around the lake takes forty minutes and most of the city does it.

When to go
Clearest from January to April. Expect mist most afternoons whatever the month — that's the hill country, not bad luck. October to December is the wettest stretch and Lipton's Seat is often closed in.
