Arugam Bay Surf & the East
A right-hand point break, a jungle park, and the other monsoon.
The east coast runs on the opposite season to the south, which is why Arugam Bay is busy in July while Mirissa is being rained on. Six days of surf, an elephant park almost nobody visits, and the snorkelling off Pigeon Island.

What actually happens.
A long day's drive, but it goes through Ratnapura and the Buttala plains and is far from dull. Arrive in time to look at the break and decide what you're doing tomorrow.

When to go
The east coast season is May to September — exactly opposite the south. Main Point is a right-hander that works best on a mid tide and gets crowded by seven; beginners start down at Baby Point, which is forgiving.
